George Berkeley, 1710 Principles of Human Knowledge "ESSE is PERCIPI (Essence is perception)" Neither our thoughts nor imaginations, nor even the sensations which compose the objects of perception, can exist otherwise than in a mind perceiving them. Whence it follows that there is no other substance but spirit, or that which perceives.
(The Australian philosopher David Stove likes to call it "the Gem".) Nonetheless, it has been widely influential in the history of philosophy, and Berkeley himself seemed to like it a great deal. After undermining the claims of materialism, Berkeley next moves on to present his own immaterialist picture.
